Are You Really Being Yourself? 3 Steps to Living More Authentically
In our last article, we explored the ‘myth of authenticity’: what authenticity actually means, what it doesn’t, and why it is one of the key ingredients of long-term fulfilment and personal growth. We saw that authenticity isn’t about saying whatever comes to mind, and it isn’t a myth simply because we are all shaped by the people and environments around us. Instead, it is about consciously understanding who you are and choosing how to show up across every area of your life. In this article, we move from the ‘why’ to the ‘how’: sharing practical strategies and exercises to help you become more authentic to yourself, at work, in your relationships, and within yourself.
Practical steps toward authenticity
1. Understanding Yourself Better
The first step towards becoming more authentic is through self-discovery and self-awareness. Developing a deeper understanding of your values, strengths, beliefs, emotions, and motivations allows you to better uncover who you are and how you want to show up in both your personal and professional life.
The more aware you become of your authentic self, the easier it is to recognise what feels aligned with who you are and what you want to achieve. The goal is for you to make more conscious choices that support your personal growth and development at work and in your personal life.
Equally, it’s important to explore the more challenging aspects of yourself: the situations that make you feel afraid, anxious, frustrated, or overwhelmed. When these emotions come up during coaching, they provide the client valuable insight into their mindset, limiting beliefs, and behaviors that may be influencing their decisions and holding them back.
Understanding what makes you feel happy, excited, and motivated, as well as what triggers fear, stress, or discomfort, gives you a more complete picture of yourself. To live more authentically, you need to develop self-awareness around both sides of your identity.
2. Self-Accept Without Judgement
The second step towards living more authentically is self-acceptance. This means recognising both your strengths and your flaws without judging yourself or falling into self-criticism. Take a step back and take responsibility for who you are, embracing both the qualities you value and the qualities you like less about yourself.
With commitment and consistency, this growth mindset helps you become more connected to the person you truly are and create an inner personal alignment.
In fact, from a personal development perspective, we all have different parts of ourselves (sometimes called subpersonalities). Each part is driven by different values, needs, fears, and goals. One part may seek authenticity and self-expression, while another prioritises safety, approval, or avoiding conflict.
Self-awareness helps you identify these internal conflicts, but self-acceptance and inner alignment helps you resolve them. Rather than allowing one part of you to automatically take over, you can consciously decide which values and behaviours best serve you in that situation.
A helpful exercise is to identify your different "parts" or subpersonalities. Ask yourself:
- What is this subpersonality trying to achieve?
- What values and goals drive it?
- How does it help me at this moment?
By understanding these different parts, you can decide which ones best support the person you want to become overall. Rather than feeling pulled in different directions, you begin to create cooperation between them, leading to greater authenticity, self-confidence, emotional balance, and better decision-making.
Personal development coaching can make this process easier by helping you recognise these inner conflicts, challenge limiting beliefs, and develop practical strategies to create greater inner alignment. The goal isn't to change who you are, but to help the different parts of you work together so you can show up more authentically and confidently in every area of your life.
3. Taking Aligned Action
Understanding and accepting who you are becomes more meaningful and impactful when you begin to express it in the way you think, speak, and behave day to day.
This doesn’t mean sharing every thought or acting on every impulse. As we explored earlier, authenticity is about conscious choice - deciding when, where, and how to express yourself in a way that feels genuine and appropriate to the situation. Sometimes that means speaking up and voicing an opinion you would previously have held back. Other times it means setting a boundary, saying no, or simply allowing yourself to show up as you are.
Taking aligned action also means gently challenging the fears that hold you back: the fear of being judged, of looking stupid, or of being rejected. Each time you choose to express your authentic self, even in small ways, you build evidence that it is good to do so, and your confidence grows. Over time, these small choices compound into a life that feels genuinely aligned with who you are.
A helpful exercise is to start small and intentional. Identify one situation this week, at work, in a relationship, or with yourself, where you could show up slightly more authentically. Notice what holds you back, choose consciously how you want to respond, and reflect afterwards on how it felt.
Personal development coaching can support this step by helping you plan communication strategies for different situations, build the confidence to act on your values, and reflect on what you learn along the way. The goal is not to force change overnight, but to help you show up more authentically, one choice at a time, and as you build consistency, the benefits compound.
